The lively railway museum Bochum offers unique insights into the history of the steam locomotive.

Eisenbahnmuseum Bochum - Railway History(s) alive and tangible

With great dedication and committed volunteers, the railway museum Bochum presents more than 150 historical railway vehicles, signals and much more, which has to do with the development of the railway. Have you always wanted to look over the locomotive driver's shoulder? Or sit on a trolley? No problem! At the railway museum you can not only immerse yourself in the history of the railway, but also experience and literally experience the most diverse trains in motion.

Guided tours and events for visitors

The typical railway environment with its buildings, technical facilities and lots of rails makes this visit to the museum unique and a great journey back in time. You can get a little insight into the world of steam and iron every Sunday and and on public holidays with a free guided tour. In addition, numerous events and the Museum Days invite curious visitors to learn even more stories about steam locomotives and the like.

Playful journey of discovery for children

The Railway Museum also offers guided tours for children. What they have experienced there can then be replayed or painted in the playroom. The public children's days and the great Easter egg hunt offer additional fun and great hands-on activities. Under the motto "Steel, Steam & Detectives" is the birthday program, where the little ones can go on a treasure hunt and test the trolley for themselves. All in all, a real tip for families!

Time travel with a look behind the scenes

Various historical trains are available to give you an insight into the industrial culture of the Ruhr Area, some of which are rarely used. On the theme and special trips you can admire for example the above-ground installations of Prosper Haniel colliery and Zeche Zollverein. A special highlight in winter is the trip to a Christmas market in the region. Always at your side: An absolute expert as a travel guide. You can also take further small trips with the museum train or the popular "Schweineschnäuzchen" through the Ruhr Valley on selected days.

With loving attention to detail

The last completely preserved steam locomotive depot today reveals of few other rarities. A special highlight is the functional 20-metre turntable. Locomotives were repaired here until the late sixties. Locomotives were the most important means of transport for transporting raw materials, especially during the industrialisation and the heyday of the coal and steel industry in the Ruhr Area. The "Friends of the Railway" are still working tirelessly on the further development of the museum and the preservation of the railways. A true project of the heart!
